How to play Snake

Start Snake by looking at the playing area and its controls. Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Use the example below to understand a decision.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Press Play to start the movement.
  2. Turn with arrow keys, swipes or the on-screen direction buttons.
  3. Each apple adds ten points and makes the snake longer.
  4. Pause when needed or start a new round.

Controls

Keyboard arrows, swipe gestures or the four direction buttons. Play / pause controls the movement. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

When moving right, you may turn up or down, but cannot turn immediately left into your own neck. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

The snake continues moving between inputs. Plan a route with space to turn. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
