How to play Nonogram

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Nonogram. Shade the grid so every row and column matches its run-length clues. Use the example below to understand a decision. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Look at what changes after your first action.

Work through a collection of twelve 5×5 picture puzzles.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Shade the grid so every row and column matches its run-length clues. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Cycle a square between filled, crossed and blank.
  2. Keep separate runs apart by at least one blank.
  3. Combine row and column deductions.
  4. Check puzzle verifies the finished grid.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

Clue 2 1 requires a run of two, a blank separator, and a run of one. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Do not merge two separate runs. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
