How to play Tangram

Bring your attention to one round of Tangram. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Look at what changes after your first action.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Compare the situation with the worked example. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
