How to play Slitherlink

Try Slitherlink at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Ten 4×4 loop puzzles with all cell clues shown.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Click an edge to draw, exclude or clear it.
  2. Count the four edges around each cell.
  3. Do not branch or form separate loops.
  4. Check puzzle verifies every clue and loop connectivity.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

A 0 cell has no loop edge around it; a 3 has exactly three. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

Several small loops are invalid even if clues match. Check the rule before repeating the action. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
